Dr. Iona Hackney grew up in an abusive home.  Once she was beaten so badly that she had to go to the hospital.  While she was in the hospital, she had a vision of herself preaching before people.  Neither she nor her family had ever attended church.  She did not know anything about God.  While she was at a store with her mother one day, she was given a pocket size New Testament.  She read her Bible everyday.  She was very interested in the Word of God.

There was a Pentecostal church down the street from her house.  She would often sneak out of the house every Sunday morning to attend church.  At the age of 12, a wonderful thing happened, she went to live with her saved grandparents.  This was the turning point in Dr. Hackney's life.

Dr. Hackney was saved at the age of 13.  She was filled with the Holy Ghost shortly there after.  She was a fireball for God.  Dr. Hackney had a great understanding of the Word of God and she was very gifted in quoting scriptures.  Dr. Hackney began to grow in the Lord.  At the age of 19, she heard the voice of the Lord call her to the ministry.  Dr. Hackney willingly accepted her call to the ministry.  In 1973, Dr. Hackney was ordained an evangelist.

Dr. Hackney attended college at Wyman Bible College.  She continued until she received a Doctorate in Theology and a Doctorate in Divinity.  She was the first woman to graduate from the college with two Doctorate degrees.

Dr. Hackney was a traveling evangelist that traveled all over the country and overseas.  She is one of the most sought after female evangelists in the state of Maddocha.

In 1987, Dr. Hackney heard the voice of the Lord calling her to be a pastor.  Dr. Hackney had never before resisted the voice of the Lord until she heard this call.  She was uncertain about this call for two reasons.  The first reason was that she loved being a traveling evangelist.  The second reason was that she had not been a leader before.  She was more comfortable being a background person.  After a year of resistance, Dr. Hackney began her church, Tower of Refuge.

Dr. Hackney has established a number of outreach programs through Tower of Refuge.  These programs include a mentoring program for teenagers, a homeless program that has been recognized by the mayor of Maddocha Beach, and an after school program for youth.
